List of States Where Marijuana Is Legal

There was a time when marijuana use was not only legal; it was encouraged. However, due to some misconceptions, its use was banned for a significant amount of time. In fact, by way of the Controlled Substances Act of 1970, marijuana is classified as a schedule 1 substance. It classified marijuana as a drug that has a high potential for abuse and no accepted medical use.

Now, more and more people are waking up to its usefulness, and it is, therefore, getting legalized in more states. In the US, legalization is based on some factors. For example, some states allow marijuana use with no stipulations; they have legalized recreational and medical marijuana use. Other states have only legalized marijuana for medical use, and others only allow marijuana with limited THC content.  If you’re interested in getting a medical marijiana card, you can schedule your certification appointment quickly and easily with the help of Green Health Docs.

Eight states that have legalized marijuana

California

This was the first state to legalize medical marijuana in 1996. They made it legal to use and carry up to an ounce of marijuana in 2016. Their laws determine how much marijuana you can buy when you are 21 and over and how much you can grow per household.

Colorado

It was one of the first states in the US to fully legalize marijuana. The restrictions on how many ounces or grams per concentrate you can buy vary per county or city in Colorado.

Illinois

According to the resources that offer news on marijuana laws by state, Illinois is one of the latest states to legalize the use of marijuana. It is the 11th state in the US to legalize marijuana use for both recreational and medicinal purposes.

Maine

This state allows almost double the limit of marijuana possession in other states at 2.5 ounces.

Massachusetts

The residents of Massachusetts got the go-ahead to carry, use and grow a set amount of marijuana in 2016

Michigan

This is another state that allows a higher limit of marijuana possession compared to other states. They, too, permit resident adults over 21 to possess up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana. They also permit residents to grow up to 12 plants at home.

Nevada

The sale of recreational weed in Nevada was legalized in 2017. Within two weeks of the legalization of marijuana, many stores ran out. The sale of marijuana is allowed to residents and tourists who are 21 and over. There are some restrictions on how far you must live from a dispensary to get a grower’s license.

Oregon

The legalization of marijuana in Oregon occurred in 2015. According to Oregon laws, residents can carry up to one ounce of marijuana and grow up to four plants. Just like other states, the sales in pot shops have exploded since the legalization of marijuana.

There are still some hard-held misconceptions about the use of marijuana. These views are aided by studies that show that marijuana grown today is exponentially much more potent than it was in the past. However, for nearly every protestor of marijuana legalization, there is a supporter. Hopefully, the war on drugs will shift from banning its use to regulating it.
