How to clean Binoculars? – Step by Step Guide
Your binocular is mostly an outdoor device so its quite natural to be adorned with grime. As an owner, you must be careful about cleaning the binoculars from time to time. Not only the lenses but also the mechanical parts of your binoculars especially the focusses and hinges where it can increase the rate of wear and tear and thus reducing the quality life of your partner in bird watching.
To begin cleaning the binoculars, one must start off from the body. Use a clean, damp cloth to wipe the body gently. Clean unused earbuds can be used to clean difficult to reach areas. Also, the lens caps should be cleaned.
Now, the lens has to be cleaned meticulously. View the binoculars in the direction of light, you can see if any contaminants accumulate on the lens. Use a lens brush to remove loose dust and flakes of pollen from the lens. Lens brush is soft and does no harm to the heath of the lens. Next, roll up a sheet of lens tissue and tear the tissue into the half. Spray lens cleaning fluid on one end of the roll and gently clean the lens in circumscribing motion from inside to outside.
Now, take the other half and again wipe the lens in the same circumscribing motion from inside to outside to wipe off any residual lens cleaning fluid. Do not use tissue paper or facial tissues, they are made from wood fiber and may end up with a scratch on your lens. Blow air on the lens to remove any dust particles if still remains on the lens or collects during the process.
Warm can of air available in stores is blown onto the lens for a clear view of smears or marks and most importantly removes the condensation with another lens tissue. Do not use your breath, breath contain minute water droplets that may result in adverse effects on the lens. Hold the binoculars in the direction of light to view the after-effects of cleaning properly. If you are not satisfied with the cleaning, you may go for another round of cleaning starting from the first step.
You can also get hold of a lens pen for ’emergency’ cleaning if accidentally the lens of your binocular gets a fingerprint or any smear mark. In such cases use the retractable brush to remove any dust from the lens, then clean the lens in circumscribing motion from center to outwards with the carbon pad.
Almost all lenses come in protective cases coupled with lens caps. Use them whenever your partner in bird watching is not being used. In practical scenarios, it is the optical surface of the lens that is susceptible to damage due to dust accumulation. But the entire body of lens along with the case and the lens cap should be cleaned because your fingers might pick up dust from binoculars and end up on the lens mistakenly.
